Dodital is a 6-day trek covering approximately 55–58 km return, starting and ending at Dehradun with the trailhead at Sangamchatti in Uttarkashi district. The lake sits at 3,078 m (10,100 ft) and the highest point — Darwa Top — reaches 4,150 m (13,615 ft). The trek is graded easy to moderate, which makes it one of the few Himalayan treks that genuinely works for first-timers with decent fitness. That said, Day 4 to Darwa Top is a proper summit push with a steep climb and significant altitude gain — don’t underestimate it. The descent on Day 5 covers 22 km in a single day and requires good knees and stamina. A forest permit from the Uttarakhand Forest Department is mandatory, and the number of permits issued daily is limited, so booking well in advance is important.

The best time to do the Dodital Trek is April to June and September to November. April and May are especially beautiful — rhododendrons are in full bloom, the forest is bright green, and the skies are clear enough to see peak reflections in the lake. June is warm and pleasant but the window closes as monsoon approaches in July. September and October bring post-monsoon clarity, golden-brown foliage, and crisp mountain air — many trekkers consider this the most visually rewarding window. Late October and November can bring early snowfall near Darwa Top, which adds drama but also demands more preparation. Unlike most Himalayan treks, Dodital can even be done in winter — December to February sees the lake partially frozen and the forest blanketed in snow, turning the whole trail into a quiet, otherworldly experience.

What makes Dodital genuinely stand out is the combination of things it offers that you rarely find together on a single accessible trail. There’s the mythology — the belief that this is where Lord Ganesha was born gives the lake a sanctity that even non-religious trekkers tend to feel the moment they arrive. There’s the ecology — Dodital is one of the few high-altitude lakes in Uttarakhand where the Himalayan brown trout still thrives, and the forests on the way are among the best birdwatching corridors in the region with species like the Himalayan Monal, Red-Billed Blue Magpie, and Whistling Thrush. And then there’s the summit — Darwa Top opens up a panorama that rivals passes twice its altitude, with views stretching across the entire Garhwal Himalayan range on both the Gangotri and Yamunotri sides. For a trek that stays mostly inside a forest and peaks at 13,615 ft, it delivers a landscape variety and emotional range that very few treks of similar difficulty can match.
